4 questions. One clear answer — correct type, correct size, ISI certification to look for, and verified products on Amazon India.
The most common mistake Indian households make is buying a single ABC dry powder extinguisher and placing it in the kitchen. This is wrong for two reasons: ABC powder must never be used on cooking oil fires (Class F), and the kitchen is where the risk is highest. A fire blanket is the correct primary kitchen fire tool.
The correct extinguisher type depends entirely on the fire class: Class A (wood, paper, fabric) — water or ABC powder. Class B (flammable liquids, petrol) — ABC powder or CO₂. Class C (gas fires) — ABC powder. Class E/Electrical — CO₂ only (never water). Class F (cooking oil) — fire blanket only (never ABC powder).
All fire extinguishers sold in India must be certified to IS 15683:2018 (Amendment 1, 2025). Verify any purchase using the BIS CARE app — enter the CM/L licence number printed on the label. Verified brands include Ceasefire (CM/L-8886112) and Kanex (CM/L-3802567).
Annual inspection per IS 2190:2024 is mandatory. A 2 kg ABC unit costs ₹300–500 to refill. Replace the unit if the pressure gauge needle falls below the green zone.
